When asked ‘What sort of boat should I buy?’ by someone wanting to explore all 2,000 miles of our canal system a boat like Lamplighter ll is what springs to mind.
It’s what you might call a ‘second boat,’ - that’s the boat specified by someone with experience of owning a boat, who now knows what they really want.
Built by Gary Gorton in 2002, with the fit-out completed by Hanbury Boats in 2003, it is a well-constructed semi-trad vessel with a 10mm baseplate and a well cared for water-cooled, Barrus Shire, Yanmar four-cylinder diesel engine in the spotlesss engine room. It has a PRM gearbox.
From the semi-trad stern, which has a protective cover to keep out the wet, you step down into the stern bedroom with a fixed double bed, cupboards and a wardrobe, as well as storage under the bed. There is also a cupboard housing the calorifier tank, supplying hot water.
Adjacent to the bedroom is the bathroom, with a roomy shower cubicle as well as a wash basin and Thetford cassette toilet.
Heading towards the bow, you come next to the galley, lit by a window on one side and an opening side-hatch on the other. There is a Thetford grill and oven and a separate Vanete hob, as well as a Coolmatic refrigerator. The galley has plenty of work surfaces and storage.
The lounge area is where you find the Morso multi-fuel stove, complete with two coal scuttles, one of the hand painted with traditional roses and castles. There are also two comfortable lounger chairs.
Before you reach the bow doors you find two built in settees, giving more seating space and making up to another double bed, giving four berths on the vessel as a whole.
The whole vessel is fitted out using crown-cut oak and ash linings and it has five windows in the living areas with four portholes elsewhere.
Not only have the owners looked after Lamplighter ll – it has a Boat Safety Certificate until 2023, it was blacked in 2017 and had a new set of batteries fitted last year – they have left it in turn-key condition, with only their personal possessions removed.
The boat comes with various windlasses, mooring pins, more than a dozen hanging wall plates, a TV aerial, spare water pump, hose-reel, new oil filters and even a couple of bags of coal and a spare cassette toilet!
Here is a boat you can step on board and sail off into the sunset.
